When communication and trust go out the window…

When you fight, at least you feel alive, involved, hoping you’re making progress. But when arguing becomes a way of life, you just shut down. No way to resolve the issues.

Allowing distance to be created between you and your partner makes the gulf even wider – and crossing it even more difficult. Withdrawal seems easier.

Reduced intimacy between partners can develop into major issues.

Sexual distance may start with feeling disconnected or misunderstood. Affection may feel lost – or only a distant memory.

Relying on the use of electronics to simulate a sex life with your partner frequently adds to the distance. Vulnerability of one or both partners may make the chasm even wider.

So far, it may seem like the periods of difficulties within the marriage can be resolved. But what if there is more?

Infidelity and lengthy affairs can rip apart the foundation of a marriage.

Once that trust has been broken you no longer feel safe. You begin to feel isolated, afraid, overwhelmed and alone. In addition, hurt and resentment sets in which can lead to additional conflict and emotional withdrawal.

The feelings of betrayal are strong… whether the infidelity is with excessive use of pornography or receiving emotional and sexual activity outside of marriage. There goes the trust and affection that you thought would never be broken.
